Our Social Responsibility

Our Estates

The extensive grounds of the Consall and Basford Estates are the star of the show. Our aim has always been to showcase this area of natural beauty and encourage our guests to reconnect with nature and form a deeper appreciation of the English countryside.

Working with local conservation architects, The Tawny was developed to safeguard the future of this remarkable landscape through sustainable tourism.

Preserving the ecology of the site was of paramount importance to us. Specialist ‘low impact’ construction methods were used for our Wingspan Colletion to minimise disruption to established tree roots; the rooms, which were sourced and built in the UK, are a transient feature of the wider estate and can be removed without leaving a footprint, should the need arise.

Our recently opened Fledglings and soon to open Owlets have seen us restore listed properties to be preserved for future generations.

Renewable Energy

Sustainability is one of our core principles and our entire Consall Estate 70 acre site is currently powered off grid, with the use of efficient generators and our 650kwh battery. Our battery has allowed the site to cut emissions by nearly 40%. Our Fledglings and Owlets on the Basford Estate are all heated by biomass boilers, with some of the wood chip from the estates themselves.

We have began our journey to solar, which will be complete in Spring 2026. Our batteries are now installed, allowing the engines to only now 60% of the time, cutting our emissions for energy in almost half! Our future move to solar panels at The Consall Estate will see a saving of 27.57 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year and once installed The Tawny will have an A++ EPC Rating.

Bookings make an Impact

Did you know, that for every booking made for our Fledgling Properties, we plant a tree on the estates?

So far this has seen us restore woodlands on the Consall Hall Estate, the development of our new Orchard and more! Since opening we planted over 300 tree's across the estates, including Sargeant's Cherry's, Spanish Swamp Oaks and Living Fossil (Metasequoia).

Our recently created bee hives, help us keep our estates thriving and pollenated, along with serving great tasting honey for our guests. The Estates team work hard each year to ensure our estates are the best they can be, from restoring neglected areas of the past, to attracting new wildlife.

Ethically Sourced

It is important that our suppliers are also on board with our policies, maintain their own and we source locally where possible and responsibly.

Our food is sourced locally, through suppliers such as Wells Dairy, Dunwood Farm and Sprinks Farm which are all within less than a 5 mile radius.  Our Tea and Coffee suppliers are all Rainforest Alliance Certified and meet FairTrade standards. Our one supplier, Good and Proper Tea, is B-Corp accredited.

In room supplies are also heavily focused on. We do not use disposable footwear such as slippers, with flip flops being encouraged to be taken by guests, or they are taken away to be recycled/reused. Our in room amenities are also refillable to reduce plastic waste.

Our newly created 'Herb Hollow', has now seen us create some produce for our Menu's for the first time, and can be viewed for all guests to see!

Our Team and Community

The Tawny was developed by two local families with strong ties to the community.  We have always sought to strengthen links with the local community. We have re-planned the roads several times to improve ease of access to residents. In winter the hotel sends out the team and grits the main village lanes, which are not done by the council.

The hotel lends its resources and expertise where possible, including working with local colleges, businesses and purchasing produce from local and independent producers. The hotel has also supported local causes including Staffordshire Community Foundation and The Tawny Academy sees the team visit schools, do ‘take overs’ at colleges, and trips to the Tawny to inspire the next generation.

Accessibility

We comply with the access requirements of local disability legislation, if you have special requirements please inform us at the time of booking. We have two accessible rooms at the hotel. Our Lookout rooms is accessible (The Family Lookout), DDA fittings can be added as required, a list of options is available upon request. Our on-site buggies can also get guests to and from the destinations required.
